In the novel, streets have paintings of working men in the style of Russian socialist art, and in the film, there is a mural of socialist artwork with obscenities drawn on it. Kubrick asserted that the film held comparisons between both the left and right end of the political spectrum and that there is little difference between the two. When McDowell started to dress by putting the jockstrap under his pants, Kubrick told him it'd look better over his pants instead, and the look made it into the final movie. Still, Kubrick has shared analysis of the film's central issues. Removed from the scandal surrounding its original release, the film did not open up any long-buried arguments about the role of art in inciting violence, nor did it appear to encourage any copycat crimes. This masterful, dystopian film, based on the groundbreaking novel of the same name by Anthony Burgess, deals with some extremely difficult and graphic material. The most famous location was Alex's apartment block, which was shot at the Thamesmead Housing Estate in Southeast London, a housing project built in the late s. Kubrick chose to use fast-motion blur to film the sex scene between Alex and the two women from the record shop in order to ensure that it wouldn't be specifically cited by censors for sexually explicit content. Novelist's response[ edit ] Burgess had mixed feelings about the film adaptation of his novel, publicly saying he loved Malcolm McDowell and Michael Bates , and the use of music; he praised it as "brilliant", even so brilliant that it might be dangerous. The teenage slang has a heavily Russian influence, as in the novel; Burgess explains the slang as being, in part, intended to draw a reader into the world of the book's characters and to prevent the book from becoming outdated.
In an introduction called "A Clockwork Orange Resucked," he refers to a person who "has the appearance of an organism lovely with colour and juice but is in fact only a clockwork toy to be wound up by God or the Devil or since this is increasingly replacing both the Almighty State.
Society should not do the wrong thing for the right reason, even though it frequently does the right thing for the wrong reason. He just likes total control. Adaptation[ edit ] The cinematic adaptation of A Clockwork Orange was not initially planned.
The writer, Patrick Magee, is a lunatic of the Left Their means and ends are hardly distinguishable. The only stipulation was that they had to be within driving distance from his house outside London.
Kubrick based his screenplay on the book's American version, which had the happy ending excised altogether. McDowell never even had to audition—and if the actor had declined the role, Kubrick allegedly would have dropped the project altogether.
